for recent studies and reports on research into depression and their fight to stop the stigma that is often associated with mental illness.
Depression and anxiety in today's society is finally being talked about more openly. With the help of organisations like the Black Dog Institute, Beyond Blue and Sane Australia the public are slowly starting to understand and accept mental illness as a real, and treatable illness.
Public statements made in recent years by several high ranking politicians and international sports people telling the world of their affliction with a depressive disorder has helped highlight its effects and occurrence in society today.
The media is starting to give mental illness the coverage it deserves and questions are finally being asked about why the priority of research into mental illness and research into depression treatment is not higher in Government funding budgets.
The Government and drug companies are starting to provide higher levels of funding and research grants for research into depression treatment. I guess the Drug companies can see the dollar return for any support they give to find treatments for mental illness.
With the worldwide trend of people turning to complementary health care, attention is also being paid to the fact that natural therapies can often achieve the desired results, without the adverse side effects which are often associated with anti depressant synthetic drugs.
More clinical studies of the value and benefits of natural therapies need to be requested, the Government needs to be encouraged to provide funding for research.
An issue such as genetic differences in the way Depression affects men and women is being studied. Did you know, “only three out of a group of 19 different depression-associated regions identified on human chromosomes are common to both sexes”, apparently the other 16 are gender specific.
Hopefully the research into Depression Treatment and the resulting discoveries and confirmation of other studies will lead to the development and wider acceptance of natural or complementary therapy as well as new treatments of the various symptoms and effects of Depression, Anxiety and Panic disorders.
Energy is being put into reducing the effects of the Depression in men that is known to result in mood swings, irritability, social isolation and compulsive behaviours.
Although Sexual Dysfunction may be related to a physical health condition it is also being acknowledged that sometimes it can also be either a symptom or consequence of Anxiety or Depression.
Studies are being undertaken to find ways to reduce the feelings of guilt, hopelessness and inadequacy that overwhelm many depressed women and men.
The Complementary Medicine approach involves supporting your body as a whole to access its natural innate, healing mechanisms. Digestion, immune support, essential fatty acids and vitamin and mineral supplements may all be necessary. Such an approach aims to create health and well-being and improve resistance to disease.
Research is resulting in the acceptance of new and tested treatments and in turn it is making it easier for you to receive the treatment that works best with you. Your mind, body and spirit are as one and deserve the best care possible.
