Aromatherapy Base Oils Use Them With or Without Essential Oils.
Aromatherapy Base Oils used in massages are normally the light vegetable oils. They can be used straight or blended with one of their heavier nutrient rich vegetable oil cousins.
The organic vegetable extract oils used in massages are an ideal carriers for applying the beneficial properties of essential oils, hence the name aromatherapy base oils.
Because of the potency of essential oils it is recommended they should not be applied directly to your skin and this is another good reason to blend them into the base massage oil.
Wheat Germ Oil: is an anti-oxidant and is sometimes used as an additive to other light oils to lengthen their working life and hold their freshness. Wheat Germ oil is rich in vitamin E and is beneficial to dry skin.
Sunflower Oil: can be used straight or blended with a more robust oil. It is a popular choice for massages as it is light and non-sticky in texture.
Olive Oil: contains vitamin E. It is a nutrient rich oil. Olive Oil has a sticky, thick texture, it has a robust fragrance and is a popular choice for massage work. It is excellent for treating dry or chapped skin and is beneficial as hand oil. It is sometimes blended with organic hand lotions.
Jojoba Oil: is one of the classic aromatherapy base oils that is suitable for skin repair, it is rich in vitamin E and can be used straight or blended with other oils. It is suitable for just about all skin types.
Grapeseed Oil: is a wonderful oil to blend with nutritious oils such as Almond Oil, Avocado Oil or Olive Oil. Grapeseed Oil is a popular choice as an aromatherapy base oil because it does not obstruct the fragrance of the essential oil when added for massage work. It has a light texture and does not have a fragrance. It is easily absorbed by most skin types. It can benefit from blending with a vitamin E rich oil.
Avocado Oil: is a wonderful oil full of vitamins, protein, lecithin, essential fatty acids. It has a relative thick texture and works well as a massage oil when it is blended with a light oil like the Grapeseed oil. Because of its additional nutrient levels it is ideal for mature skin.
Almond Oil: is one of the special oils. It works really well when blended with a lighter oil such as Sunflower or Grape seed oils. Almond oil is nutrient rich with a wonderful variety of minerals and vitamins especially vitamin D. It is suitable for most skin types. If you are going to use Almond Oil as a base for essential oils you still need to test for skin reactions and compatibility. Sweet Almond (seed) Oil: this is one of the softest carrier oils I have found. It is almost fragrant free and my skin absorbs it instantly. I find it is a wonderful carrier for most essential oils that are suitable for use in massage therapy.
